How comps are measured
Compositions are counted by how many DIFFERENT teams ran them, never by how many games were played. One team grinding an evening can produce twenty games on a single composition, which says everything about that team and nothing about the composition.
For the same reason, one roster contributes at most five games to a composition's win rate. Their own rate is kept and only their weight is bounded, so the figure cannot be carried by a single pair of players. Each card shows the raw, uncapped rate beside the adjusted one so the correction is visible.
A tier is one score with three parts, in this order of weight: the rating a composition is played at (most), its win rate corrected for a small sample (less), and how many different teams run it (least). Tiers are relative, like the spec tier list — S is well above the bracket's average composition, C well below. A letter needs five different teams and twenty games; a win rate alone needs twenty, so a card can show a percentage and still wait for its letter. And a composition that loses most of its games never rises above B, whatever rating it is played at.
This view rests on 3,208 matches and 2,252 distinct teams. Coverage is partial by nature: a match is here because somebody in it runs the recording addon, so this is a sample of arena, never a complete record of it. WoW Arena Logs
3v3 Arena comps FAQ
- Where does this data come from?
- From WoW Arena Logs, whose addon records the matches its users play. Blizzard publishes ladders and results but never says who was on the other team, so this is the only way to see a composition at all.
- Why is a comp with a higher win rate ranked below one at 52%?
- Because rating comes first. A composition winning 60% at 1600 and one winning 52% at 1900 are not the same claim — the second holds its own where the games are harder. The tier weighs the rating a comp is played at most, then the win rate, then how many teams run it; the win rate is also pulled towards 50% while the sample is small, so a 70% over twenty games counts for less than it reads.
- Why is my comp missing?
- A composition needs several different teams behind it before it is listed at all, and it only appears here if somebody in those games was recording. Narrow the rating band or widen the period and it may show up.
