WoW PvP Rewards by Rating: What Each Rank Unlocks
Every reward rated PvP hands out and the rating it sits behind: the cosmetic set from 1000 to 1800, the Honor and Conquest gear ladder, both mounts, the three kinds of title, and the rewards that are not rating locked at all.

What every rating threshold gives you
Rated PvP pays out in four separate currencies of progress: cosmetic rewards tied to rank, gear you buy with Honor and Conquest, mounts tied to participation and to Elite rank, and titles decided either by rank or by a ladder cutoff. The rank ladder is the spine of all of it, and it is identical in every rated bracket.
Rank | Rating | Reward in Midnight Season 2 | Title |
|---|---|---|---|
Combatant I | 1000 | Season cloak | |
Combatant II | 1200 | Legs and bracers | None |
Challenger I | 1400 | Gloves and boots | |
Challenger II | 1600 | Chest and belt | None |
Rival I | 1800 | Shoulders and helm | |
Rival II | 1950 | Weapon illusion | None |
Duelist | 2100 | Prestigious cloak | |
Elite | 2300 | Gladiator's tabard |
Two rules make this table easier to use than it looks. A rank counts once you touch its rating in any rated bracket, so 1800 in Solo Shuffle unlocks the same shoulders as 1800 in 3v3. And a rank never expires during its season: falling back below the rating afterwards does not remove anything you have already unlocked.
The cosmetic set is assembled, not awarded
The seasonal PvP armour appearance does not arrive in one piece at a single rating. It is handed out slot by slot as you climb, which is why the ladder from 1000 to 1800 has a reward at every step: cloak, then legs and bracers, then gloves and boots, then chest and belt, then shoulders and helm.
By 1800 the set is complete. Everything above that rating is a separate, more visible layer: a weapon illusion at 1950, this season Illusion: Venomcoil, a distinct prestigious cloak at 2100, and the tabard at 2300. Those three are the pieces other players actually recognise, because they cannot be assembled by anyone below the rating.
All of it is seasonal. Each season issues its own version of the appearance, so a piece you did not unlock this season is not available next season at the same rating.
The gear ladder: what Honor and Conquest actually buy
PvP gear works on a scaling system. A piece has a normal item level in the open world and a higher one inside rated PvP and battlegrounds, and it is that second number that matters for how hard you hit in an arena.
Tier | Item level inside PvP | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
Combatant, crafted | 318 | Crafted gear certified with Venomous Combatant's Heraldry, from PvP activities or Honor |
Aspirant, Honor | 331 | Bought with Honor, or crafted gear certified with Venomous Aspirant's Heraldry |
Gladiator, Conquest | 344 | Bought with Conquest, or crafted gear certified with Venomous Gladiator's Heraldry |
The practical reading is that there is no rating requirement on gear at all. Conquest gear at 344 is bought with a currency you earn by playing rated matches at any rating, so a player sitting at 1200 and a player sitting at 2400 buy exactly the same items. Rating gates cosmetics, mounts and titles. It does not gate power.
The certification reagents are the part players miss most often. Crafted equipment does not scale in PvP until it is certified, and the reagent you use decides which of the three item levels it reaches.
Conquest: the cap is the real limit
Conquest is the currency that buys the top tier of PvP gear, and it comes from rated play: arena, Solo Shuffle, rated battlegrounds and Battleground Blitz, plus weekly quests.
What controls your gearing speed is not how much you play but the cap. In Midnight the Conquest cap starts at 1600 in the first week of a season and rises by 800 every week after that. The cap is cumulative, so a week you miss is not lost: come back later and you can earn everything you did not collect while the ceiling was lower.
One threshold is worth planning around. Earning 2500 Conquest during the season completes Venomous Weapons of Conquest, which hands you weapon tokens, which is the cheapest route to a rated weapon and normally your single largest power upgrade of the early season.
Honor and the catch-up layer
Honor comes from unrated play, mostly battlegrounds, and buys the Aspirant tier at 331 in PvP plus the reagent that certifies crafted gear to the same level. War Mode play feeds the same layer through Bloody Tokens, which award gear at the Honor item level.
This layer exists to remove the old problem of entering rated PvP badly undergeared. A character can reach the Honor ceiling entirely outside rated play, and the gap that remains to the Conquest tier is 13 item levels, not a season of grinding.
Both sets of gear are sold by the PvP quartermasters in Silvermoon City, and both currencies also arrive through weekly PvP quests, which is the least demanding source in the game: they can be completed in unrated battlegrounds and War Mode without ever queueing a rated match.
The order that saves the most time is unglamorous. Fill every slot with Honor gear first, because an empty slot costs far more than an unupgraded one, then replace pieces with Conquest gear as the weekly cap allows, starting with the slots that carry the most stats. Weapons come out of the 2500 Conquest achievement rather than your cap, so they should not be purchased at full price early.
There is no PvP row in the Great Vault
This is the most persistent misconception in rated PvP, and it survives because the row used to exist. Blizzard removed the PvP row from the Great Vault during The War Within and replaced it with a world content row, compensating PvP players with increased Conquest instead.
Nothing about that has changed in Midnight. The vault offers raiding, Mythic Plus and world content, and rated PvP contributes to none of them. If you play only PvP, your weekly reward is Conquest and the gear you spend it on, and the vault is simply not part of your plan.
Rating that unlocks progression rather than cosmetics
A few rating thresholds do something more useful than dressing your character. Rated rank unlocks tiers of the upgrade crests used to improve gear: the Veteran tier at Combatant I, the Champion tier at Combatant II, the Hero tier at Rival I, and the top Myth tier at the upper end of the rank ladder.
Reaching 1600 in any rated bracket also grants an additional Catalyst charge, which converts a piece into its tier appearance sooner than the default cadence allows. Both of these reward the same behaviour: climbing early, when rating is cheapest, pays off in gearing speed for the rest of the season.
Mounts: one for participation, one for Elite
Two mounts sit on completely different sides of the difficulty curve.
The Vicious mount, this season the Vicious Lightbloom Boar, is a participation reward. You earn a Vicious Saddle by winning rated matches at 1000 rating or higher in any bracket, and the saddle is exchanged for the mount. No specific bracket, no rank beyond Combatant, just wins.
The Gladiator mount, this season the Venomous Gladiator's Goredrake, comes from Gladiator: Midnight Season 2 and requires 50 rated 3v3 wins earned while at Elite rank. Both halves of that sentence matter: the wins only count once you are at 2300 or above, and they only count in 3v3. A player who reaches Elite in Solo Shuffle and never queues 3v3 does not qualify.

Titles: three different ways to earn one
Titles are the reward category players confuse most, because three unrelated mechanics produce them.
Type | Examples | How it is earned |
|---|---|---|
Rank titles | Combatant, Challenger, Rival, Duelist, the Elite | Reach the rating once, in any rated bracket |
Elite-rank grind titles | Legend, Strategist | Win a set number of games at Elite rank in a specific bracket |
Cutoff titles | Venomous Gladiator, Venomous Legend, Venomous Marshal, Venomous Warlord, Hero of the Alliance or Horde | Finish the season inside a share of the ladder |
Legend asks for 100 Solo Shuffle rounds won at Elite rank, and Strategist for 25 Battleground Blitz wins at Elite rank. Neither depends on where anyone else finishes, which makes them the highest reward in the game that is purely a matter of persistence once you are at 2300.
The names are a trap in both directions. Gladiator: Midnight Season 2 is the Elite-rank grind that awards the mount, while Venomous Gladiator: Midnight Season 2 is the rank one title decided by the ladder, and the same split exists between Legend and Venomous Legend. If a reward carries the season prefix, it is a cutoff. If it does not, it is a grind you can plan.
Cutoff titles are the opposite: they are decided by your position relative to everyone else at the moment the season ends, and the rating attached to them is not known in advance. The rules differ per bracket, and they are set out in detail in how PvP cutoffs work.
Cutoffs

What to chase first, by rating band
The reward list is dense at the bottom of the ladder and sparse at the top, so the efficient order changes as you climb.
Where you are | Chase this | Why |
|---|---|---|
Not yet rated | Honor gear to 331, then rated games for Conquest | Gear is not rating locked, and undergeared rating is expensive rating |
1000 to 1400 | Conquest cap each week, the 2500 Conquest weapons, the Vicious mount | Everything here is participation, not skill gated |
1400 to 1800 | The remaining set pieces and the extra Catalyst charge at 1600 | The cosmetic set completes at 1800 and the gearing perks stack |
1800 to 2100 | Weapon illusion at 1950, Duelist cloak at 2100 | The first rewards that are visibly rating gated |
2100 and above | Elite rank at 2300, then the Gladiator mount or Legend and Strategist | Everything above Elite is a grind with a known finish line |

What carries over when the season ends
Rewards split cleanly into things you keep and things that stop existing, and knowing which is which changes what is worth chasing in the final weeks.
Kept permanently | Reset or gone |
|---|---|
Every appearance you unlocked, in your collection | Your rating, which returns to zero for everyone |
Mounts, titles and achievements you earned | The chance to unlock this season's appearances at their rating |
The gear itself, though it is quickly outclassed | The current season's Conquest and Honor value |
The practical consequence is that a rank reward is worth more than it looks in the last two weeks of a season and worth nothing the day after. If you are within reach of a threshold late in a season, that push is the highest value play available to you, because everything above it will still be there next season while the appearance will not.
The opposite is true of gear. Conquest spent in the final week buys an item that a fresh season replaces within days, so late season Conquest is better aimed at slots you will actually use for the remaining games than at completing a set for its own sake.
Common mistakes with PvP rewards
Waiting for rating before buying gear. Conquest gear has no rating requirement. The only limit is the weekly cap.
Expecting a PvP option in the Great Vault. There has not been one since The War Within. Rated play pays in Conquest instead.
Forgetting to certify crafted gear. An uncertified crafted piece does not scale in PvP, which can quietly cost you dozens of item levels in a rated match.
Grinding Elite-rank wins in the wrong bracket. The Gladiator mount counts 3v3 wins only, Legend counts Solo Shuffle rounds, Strategist counts Blitz matches. Wins in the wrong bracket do not transfer.
Leaving the season cloak behind. Cosmetic rewards are seasonal. A piece unlocked at 1400 this season is not available at 1400 next season.
Treating a cutoff title as a rating target. Rank rewards are fixed numbers you can plan for. Cutoff titles are a moving line you cannot.
Where to check your progress
The in-game PvP interface tracks your rank progress and the season reward bar, but it does not tell you what any of it costs relative to everyone else. For that, compare your current rating against the ladder for your bracket and region, and if a title is your goal, check the live cutoff before you plan a push.
If the answer to what to play next is still open, the spec guides carry the current talent and gear chapters for each specialization and bracket, which is the other half of turning a rating target into a plan.
FAQ
Do I need rating to buy the best PvP gear?
No. Conquest gear, the top PvP tier, has no rating requirement. It is bought with Conquest earned by playing rated matches at any rating, so a player at 1200 and a player at 2400 buy identical items. What limits you is the weekly Conquest cap, not your rank. Rating gates cosmetics, mounts and titles rather than power.
Does rated PvP give a Great Vault reward?
No. The PvP row was removed from the Great Vault during The War Within and replaced with a world content row, with increased Conquest given as compensation. That has not changed in Midnight, so the vault offers raiding, Mythic Plus and world content only. A player who queues nothing but rated PvP has no vault slot from it.
Do I lose rank rewards if my rating drops afterwards?
No. A rank is unlocked the moment you touch its rating, and the rewards attached to it stay yours for that season even if you fall back below the threshold. This is the opposite of a cutoff title, which is decided only by where you stand when the season ends.
Does the rating have to be earned in a specific bracket?
For rank rewards, no: reaching the rating in any rated bracket counts, so 1800 in Solo Shuffle unlocks the same pieces as 1800 in 3v3. The exceptions are the rewards that name a bracket. The Gladiator mount counts 3v3 wins at Elite rank, Legend counts Solo Shuffle rounds won at Elite rank, and Strategist counts Battleground Blitz wins at Elite rank. Progress in one of those does not carry to another.
How do I get the seasonal PvP mount?
There are two, with very different requirements. The Vicious mount is a participation reward: win rated matches at 1000 rating or higher in any bracket to earn a Vicious Saddle, then exchange it. The Gladiator mount requires 50 rated 3v3 wins earned while at Elite rank, which is 2300 this expansion, and only wins earned after you reach that rank count.
Why does my crafted gear feel weak in arena?
Crafted equipment does not scale in rated PvP until it is certified with a Heraldry reagent, and the reagent decides which item level it reaches: 318, 331 with the Honor version, or 344 with the Conquest version. An uncertified crafted piece keeps its open world item level inside a rated match, which can leave you dozens of item levels behind for a single missed step.
Are PvP cosmetic rewards available later?
No. Each season issues its own version of the rank appearances, the weapon illusion, the prestigious cloak and the tabard. A piece you did not unlock during the season it belonged to is not obtainable at that rating in a later season, which is why the cheap rewards at the bottom of the ladder are worth collecting early rather than at the end.
