How rank one cutoffs work in every bracket

A cutoff is the rating that separates the players who receive a season's rank one title from everyone who finishes below them. Blizzard does not publish that rating in advance, because it is not a fixed number. Every rank one achievement is written as a share of a ladder, and that share only turns into a rating when the season ends and the ladder is measured.

In Midnight Season 2 the four rated ladders use three different rules, and the two solo queue ladders received an extra guarantee that did not exist in earlier expansions.

One naming detail causes most of the confusion. Gladiator, Legend and Strategist without a season prefix are rating based achievements: win the required number of games while sitting at Elite rank and they are yours regardless of where you finish on the ladder. Only the versions carrying the season's prefix, Venomous Gladiator and Venomous Legend this season, together with the Hero titles, are decided by a cutoff.

Everything else in this guide follows from those five rows: what the percentage is measured against, why the number you see in week three is not the number that decides your title, and what you have to do besides holding rating.

Cutoff, rating and ladder: three terms that get mixed up

Your rating, usually written CR, is the personal number attached to your character in one bracket. It moves after every rated game and it is what the game shows you on the PvP interface.

The ladder is the ranked list of every qualifying character in one bracket in one region, sorted by rating. Both the in-game leaderboard and the WoW Tracker leaderboards render that list.

The cutoff is a position on that ladder expressed as a percentage, converted into a rating at a single moment in time. When someone says the 3v3 cutoff is a specific number, they are describing the rating of the player currently standing at the 0.1% mark, not a threshold Blizzard has promised to honour.

This matters for a practical reason. A rating requirement such as Elite rank at 2300 is stable for the whole season: reach it once and the reward is yours. A cutoff is a race against other players, so the same rating can be comfortably above the line in one region and below it in another.

Where Midnight Season 2 stands right now

Season 2 of Midnight went live the week of 18 August 2026, after a one week pre-season that followed the end of Season 1. Blizzard confirmed in the pre-season announcement that PvP percentile cutoffs are calculated when realms enter the maintenance that closes a season, which is the clearest official statement available about when the measurement happens. The requirements quoted throughout this guide come from the official Season 2 announcement.

Season 2 also carries new title names, as every season does. Season 1 used the Galactic set, Season 2 uses the Venomous set, and the underlying rules moved with them unchanged. If you are reading an older article that names Galactic Legend or Galactic Gladiator, the mechanics it describes still apply; only the wording of the title changed.

The rank thresholds that gate the non-cutoff rewards are the same across all rated brackets this expansion.

Elite at 2300 is the gate for the seasonal Gladiator mount, the Legend title and the Strategist title, all of which are counted in wins earned while sitting at that rank. None of them is a cutoff.

3v3 arena: 0.1% of a single shared ladder

The 3v3 rule is the oldest and the simplest. End the season in the top 0.1% of the 3v3 arena ladder with 150 games won during that season and you receive Venomous Gladiator, the rank one title, on the character that qualified.

Three details decide who actually gets it. The ladder is shared: every specialization competes in one list, so a popular class does not get its own quota and an unpopular one does not get a discount. The 150 win requirement is far heavier than it looks, because it is 150 wins in 3v3 alone, not rated wins in general, and players who spend the season above the cutoff rating on low volume regularly miss the title. And the percentage is measured per region, so the European and North American lines are independent of each other.

The regular Gladiator reward sitting next to it is a different achievement entirely: 50 3v3 wins at Elite rank earns the seasonal Gladiator mount, with no ladder position involved. A player can finish a season with Gladiator and no rank one title, which is the normal outcome.

The block above tracks the rating standing at the 0.1% line in your selected region. Read it as today's price of entry, not as a target that will hold until the season ends.

Solo Shuffle: one ladder per specialization, plus the top 8 rule

Solo Shuffle does not have a single ladder. Your rating is stored per specialization, so a Frost Mage and an Arcane Mage on the same character are two separate ladder entries competing against different fields. The cutoff is applied the same way, one calculation per specialization.

That design created an obvious problem. A specialization with a small player base produced a 0.1% slice that rounded down to a handful of titles, or sometimes one, while a crowded specialization handed out dozens. Blizzard addressed it by guaranteeing the reward to the top eight players of each specialization, and the wording of Venomous Legend now reflects the combined rule: end the season in the top 0.1% or the top 8, whichever is higher, with 50 games won.

In practice the rule works like a floor, not a replacement. On a heavily played specialization the 0.1% slice is larger than eight players, so the percentage still decides. On a thinly played one, eight titles are handed out even though 0.1% of that field would have been fewer.

Compare your own specialization rather than the highest line in the table. The gap between the most contested specialization and the least contested one is usually the largest single factor in how hard a Legend title is to reach in any given season.

Battleground Blitz: the same maths, a different reward pair

Blitz follows the Solo Shuffle model exactly. Rating is tracked per specialization, the cutoff is the top 0.1% or the top 8 of that specialization, whichever produces more titles, and 50 wins are required. The reward is faction based: Alliance players receive Venomous Marshal and Horde players receive Venomous Warlord.

The trap in Blitz is not the maths, it is the name. Blitz is an eight versus eight solo queue ladder, and rated battlegrounds are a separate ten versus ten ladder with a separate rule set and separate titles. Rating earned in one does nothing for the other, and a Blitz result never contributes to a Hero title.

Rated battlegrounds: 0.5% and the Hero titles

Rated battlegrounds use the most generous percentage of the four ladders. Finish the season in the top 0.5% of the rated battleground ladder with 50 wins and you receive Hero of the Alliance or Hero of the Horde for that season, depending on your faction, as set out in Blizzard's Season 2 announcement.

Half a percent sounds far easier than a tenth, and relative to arena it is, but the rated battleground population is much smaller than the arena population, so the absolute number of titles is modest and the rating attached to the line is not low. There is no per specialization split and no top 8 floor here: one ladder, one percentage. Blizzard's published cutoff snapshots have historically listed a single rated battleground figure rather than one line per faction, while the title you receive still depends on the faction you played.

The requirements that sit next to the cutoff

Every cutoff title has a second condition, and it is the condition most often missed. The percentage decides who is eligible; the win requirement decides who actually receives the achievement.

  • 3v3: 150 games won in the season, in 3v3 only.
  • Solo Shuffle: 50 games won in the season.
  • Blitz: 50 games won in the season.
  • Rated battlegrounds: 50 games won in the season.

These counters are tied to the character and the season, and they do not transfer between brackets or between characters. Alongside them sit the fixed rank rewards that are most often mistaken for rank one, because they share their names. The achievement pages make the split visible: Gladiator: Midnight Season 2 asks for 50 wins at Elite rank, while the season-prefixed version asks for a finishing position on the ladder. Any player who reaches 2300 and puts in the required wins can hold every reward in the upper half of this table without ever approaching a cutoff.

2v2 sits outside this system. It has ranks, gear and rating rewards like every other bracket, but no rank one title is defined for it, so no cutoff is calculated.

Why the cutoff moves all season

A percentage of a moving population produces a moving rating. Three forces push it around.

Participation. More qualified players on a ladder means more titles are handed out, and where those titles land depends on how rating is distributed among the newcomers. Early season queues are crowded and inflated; late season queues thin out as players stop pushing.

Rating inflation. Ratings across a bracket tend to drift upward over a season as the top of the ladder plays out more games, so a rating that was comfortably above the line in week four often sits below it in the final week.

Specialization migration. In Solo Shuffle and Blitz this is decisive. A tuning pass that makes a specialization strong pulls players onto it, which grows that specialization's ladder and lifts its individual cutoff, while the specialization they abandoned gets easier.

Activity over the past week is the most useful early signal for the direction of a cutoff. Rising volume near the top of a ladder normally precedes a rising cutoff on that ladder.

The final weeks: snapshot, timing and when titles arrive

Cutoff titles are decided at the end of the season, not at your peak. Blizzard measures the ladders when realms go into the maintenance that closes the season, so the rating that counts is the one your character is holding at that moment. A peak of 200 rating above the line in month two is worth nothing if you finished below it.

This produces the familiar end of season behaviour, where players who are barely above an estimated line stop queueing to protect their position. It is a rational response to how the rule is written, but it is not risk free: if the line rises in the final days because others are still climbing, sitting still moves you below it without you losing a single game.

Titles and achievements are not granted instantly at the moment the season closes. The percentile calculation happens during the season-ending maintenance, and the rewards follow once that calculation has been applied, so a delay between the last game and the title appearing on your character is expected rather than a bug.

Common cutoff mistakes

Treating an estimate as a threshold. Every published cutoff figure, including Blizzard's own mid-season snapshots, describes the ladder at the moment it was taken. None of them is a promise.

Missing the win requirement. The most common way to finish above the line and receive nothing. Check your season win counters well before the final week.

Assuming top 8 means an easy title. The floor guarantees eight slots on a specialization, not eight easy slots. Other players read the same ladder data and queue that specialization for the same reason.

Splitting your Solo Shuffle or Blitz record across specializations. Rating is stored per specialization, so switching late in a season restarts your position on a new ladder while your old entry stops improving.

Mixing up Blitz and rated battlegrounds. They are different ladders with different percentages, 0.1% against 0.5%, and different titles.

Comparing regions. European and North American cutoffs are calculated separately. A rating that clears one may not clear the other.

How to track your position from here

Three checks are enough to know where you stand at any point in a season. Find the current line for your bracket on the EU cutoffs page or the US cutoffs page, and in Solo Shuffle or Blitz read the row for your own specialization rather than the headline figure. Then check the distance between your rating and that line on the leaderboard for your bracket. Finally, confirm your season win count against the requirement in the table at the top of this guide, because that is the condition you can fix with certainty and rating is the one you cannot.

FAQ

What rating do I need for a rank one title this season?

There is no fixed rating. Rank one titles are defined as a share of a ladder, so the rating attached to that share is only known when the season ends and the ladder is measured. Any number published during a season, including Blizzard's own snapshots, describes the ladder at the moment it was taken. Track the current line for your bracket and region on the WoW Tracker cutoffs page and treat it as a moving target rather than a threshold.

Is the Gladiator title decided by a cutoff?

No. The seasonal Gladiator reward is earned by winning 50 3v3 games while at Elite rank, 2300, and it does not depend on where you finish on the ladder. The same is true of Legend, which asks for 100 Solo Shuffle rounds won at Elite, and Strategist, which asks for 25 Blitz wins at Elite. The cutoff applies only to the season-prefixed titles, this season Venomous Gladiator, Venomous Legend, Venomous Marshal and Venomous Warlord, and to Hero of the Alliance and Hero of the Horde.

Does my season peak count, or my rating at the end of the season?

Your rating at the end of the season is what counts. The percentile calculation happens when realms enter the maintenance that closes the season, so a peak reached earlier does not protect you if you finish below the line. This is why players who are close to an estimated cutoff often stop queueing in the final days, and why sitting still can still cost the title if the line rises around them.

What is the top 8 rule and which brackets use it?

Solo Shuffle and Battleground Blitz store rating per specialization, so a strict 0.1% slice produced very few titles on thinly played specializations. Blizzard added a guarantee for the top eight players of each specialization, and the achievements now read as the top 0.1% or the top 8, whichever is higher. On crowded specializations the percentage still decides, because 0.1% of that field is more than eight players. The rule does not apply to 3v3 arena or to rated battlegrounds.

If I finish in the top 8 of my specialization, do I still need wins?

Yes. The ladder position and the win requirement are checked separately. Solo Shuffle and Blitz both require 50 games won during the season, and 3v3 requires 150. Finishing above the line without the wins earns nothing, which is the most common way players miss a title they were otherwise qualified for.

Is the Blitz rank one title the same as Hero of the Alliance or Hero of the Horde?

No. Battleground Blitz is a solo queue ladder with per specialization ratings, and its rank one rewards this season are Venomous Marshal for Alliance and Venomous Warlord for Horde, awarded at the top 0.1% or top 8 of a specialization with 50 wins. Hero of the Alliance and Hero of the Horde come from the separate rated battleground ladder, which uses the top 0.5% with 50 wins and has no per specialization split. Rating in one bracket does nothing for the other.

Does 2v2 have a rank one title?

No. 2v2 has the same rank structure, gear and rating rewards as the other brackets, but no cutoff title is defined for it, so no percentile is calculated. The seasonal titles decided by ladder position exist only in 3v3, Solo Shuffle, Battleground Blitz and rated battlegrounds.
