WoW War Mode: What It Gives You and What It Costs

War Mode pays 10% on world quest rewards, opens Bloody Tokens and a gear line that scales to 331 in rated play, and costs you the ability to quest unmolested. What it changes, what the seven Sparks of War quests pay, and why the Warmonger set bonus stops working in an arena.

What War Mode is

War Mode is a toggle that makes you attackable by the opposing faction everywhere in the outdoor world, and pays you for the risk. Switch it on and you are moved onto a shard populated by other players who also have it on, your PvP talents become active outside instances, and a currency and a gear line open up that are closed to everyone else.

It is entirely separate from rated PvP. Nothing you do in War Mode raises an arena rating, and nothing about your arena rating changes what happens to you in the open world. The two systems share a currency vendor city and almost nothing else.

Turning it on and off

The toggle sits at the bottom right of the Specialization and Talents window, and you need to be level 20 to see it. Switching it on can only be done in a capital: Stormwind, Orgrimmar, Valdrakken, Dornogal, Silvermoon City or Masters' Perch. Switching it off is easier: any rest area will do, including an inn.

What you cannot do is flip it standing in a field. If you turn it on in Silvermoon and regret it in Zul'Aman, you are finishing that trip flagged.

Enlisted, and what it actually pays

Turning War Mode on grants Enlisted. Its live tooltip is one line:

"Supplies and Gold rewards from world quests increased by 10%."

Ten per cent on world quest supplies and gold, and since a March 2026 hotfix that includes Voidlight Marl. It is a real bonus and a modest one, and it is not the reason to turn War Mode on. The reason is the currency and the gear, which do not exist without it.

Two things people attribute to Enlisted that do not belong to it. PvP talents in the open world come from War Mode itself, not from the aura. And the extra quest experience some guides quote is a separate effect that the tooltip does not carry.

What changes in the open world

  • PvP talents turn on. Outside instances they are active only while War Mode is, which is the single largest change to how your character plays.
  • You are sharded away from everyone else. War Mode players see War Mode players. This is why a zone can feel empty with it off and busy with it on.
  • You can be attacked while questing, which is the premise rather than a side effect.
  • Killing streaks are tracked. Ten kills without dying flags you as an Assassin, worth 15% more damage and healing, and puts you at risk of appearing as a bounty on the zone map for everyone else to hunt.
  • The 40v40 battleground has an outdoor half. Blizzard's Midnight notes state that players with War Mode on can fight in the outdoor area around Slayer's Rise.

Bloody Tokens and the two quartermasters

Bloody Tokens are the War Mode currency, earned from War Mode activities and spent on War Mode equipment. You get one per enemy player killed, fifty from a War Supply Crate, a thousand from a weekly Sparks of War quest, and a variable amount from PvP world quests.

There is no longer a cap on how many you can hold. Blizzard removed it in the hotfixes of 22 May 2026, three days after removing the Conquest and Crest caps. Anything you read about a token ceiling describes the game before that date.

Two quartermasters take them:

Warmonger gear, and the bonus that stops at the arena door

The Bloody Token gear line is called Warmonger, and this season's is the Venomous Warmonger set. A piece such as Venomous Warmonger's Breeches is item level 259 in the open world and scales to 331 inside instanced PvP, which is exactly what an Honor piece does.

That equivalence is the practical argument for the whole system. Bloody Tokens come in faster than Honor for a player who is already in the open world, and the resulting gear is the same item level in a rated match, so the Warmonger set is a legitimate way to skip most of the Honor grind.

What is new in Midnight is that the set carries bonuses of its own. From Venomous Warmonger's Wraps and its seven siblings:

  • Two pieces: Versatility increased by 6% while in War Mode.
  • Four pieces: primary stat increased by 7% and Stamina by 10% while in War Mode.

Sparks of War

These are the weekly quests that make War Mode worth a routine rather than an accident. Each asks you to collect 100 Sparks of War in one zone while War Mode is on, and each pays the same block: 1000 Bloody Tokens, 500 Honor, 50 Conquest and 50 Voidlight Marl.

Val and Naigtal are the exception to the collection item: those two ask for Otherworldly Spark of War rather than the ordinary kind, a second collectible added in patch 12.0.7. The Coiled Isle quest is the newest of the seven and arrived with patch 12.1.

Completing five of the seven awards Spark in the Night.

War Supply Crates

Zeppelins and flying machines drop supply crates across the War Mode zones, and opening one is a channel that any attack will interrupt, which is what makes them a fight rather than a pickup. Each pays Conquest, Honor, Bloody Tokens and Sparks of War at once, so they are the densest single activity in the mode. Where they land, how to contest them and what each one pays is covered in our War Supply Crate guide.

Achievements

Four are worth having on the list, and none of them needs a rating:

What changed in Midnight

  • The gear line gained set bonuses. Warmonger pieces now form an eight-piece set with a 2-piece and a 4-piece bonus, both restricted to War Mode. Previous expansions sold the gear with no set attached.
  • Silvermoon City and Masters' Perch became toggle cities, alongside the older four.
  • Voidknight Vivi joined Knight-Lord Bloodvalor as a second quartermaster, so the Voidstorm side of the world has its own vendor.
  • The Bloody Token cap is gone, since 22 May 2026.
  • A second collectible arrived in patch 12.0.7 for the Val and Naigtal quests.
  • Patch 12.1 added one thing, the Coiled Isle Sparks of War quest. Beyond extending the mode into the new zone, 12.1 left War Mode alone.

A week of War Mode, in the order that pays best

The mode rewards a route rather than a session, because the two large payments are weekly and the small ones are continuous.

  • Take the Sparks of War quest for whichever zone you are already using. A thousand Bloody Tokens plus 500 Honor and 50 Conquest is worth more than an hour of anything else in the mode, and the sparks drop while you do other things.
  • Watch for crate drops on the way. A crate pays four currencies at once and takes under a minute if nobody contests it.
  • Take PvP world quests when they are on your route, not as a separate trip.
  • Do not hunt kills for tokens. One token per player is the worst rate in the mode; kills are what happens to you while you do the rest.

The one thing worth going out of your way for is a crate you can reach before the other faction does. Everything else is a bonus on activity you had already planned.

What War Mode costs you

The obvious cost is the corpse runs. The less obvious ones matter more if you are gearing under time pressure.

  • You cannot switch it off in the field. If a group of five finds you on a rare farm, the exit is a rest area, not a menu.
  • Your shard is smaller and hostile. Contested rares and world bosses become contested in the literal sense.
  • Group content gets complicated. Queueing group activities while flagged is worth thinking about before you queue, not after.

None of that argues against the mode. It argues for turning it on deliberately, at the start of an outdoor session, rather than leaving it on permanently and being surprised.

Does any of this matter for rated PvP?

Three answers, because the question is really three questions.

  • Do you need War Mode on for PvP talents in arena? No. PvP talents are always active inside battlegrounds, arenas, Solo Shuffle and Blitz whatever the toggle says. War Mode only controls them outdoors.
  • Does Warmonger gear work in rated play? Yes, at 331, level with Honor gear. The set bonuses do not, because they are worded for War Mode.
  • Does War Mode change your item level in a rated match? No. Scaling is a property of the gear, not of the toggle, and it applies identically either way.

So for a rated player War Mode is a faster route to your first set of 331 gear and nothing more. Once Conquest pieces at 344 start arriving, its gearing value ends. The full route through Honor and Conquest is in our gearing guide.

Is it worth turning on?

If you quest, gather or farm in the outdoor world at all, yes, because the 10% and the token income cost you nothing you were not already doing. If you are gearing a fresh character for rated play, yes, until you are in Conquest. If you are already in Conquest and only queue rated brackets, War Mode is a hobby rather than a step, and a hobby that occasionally costs you a corpse run.

FAQ

Where can you turn War Mode on?

In a capital city only: Stormwind, Orgrimmar, Valdrakken, Dornogal, Silvermoon City or Masters' Perch. Turning it off is easier and works in any rest area, including an inn. You cannot toggle it in the open field in either direction.

What does the Enlisted buff give you?

Its live tooltip reads: supplies and gold rewards from world quests increased by 10%. A March 2026 hotfix extended it to Voidlight Marl. PvP talents in the open world are often credited to Enlisted but come from War Mode itself rather than from the aura.

Is there still a cap on Bloody Tokens?

No. Blizzard removed the accumulation cap in the hotfixes of 22 May 2026, three days after removing the Conquest and Crest caps. Any guide quoting a token ceiling describes the game before that date.

Is Warmonger gear any good for rated PvP?

Its item level is. A Warmonger piece is 259 in the open world and scales to 331 inside instanced PvP, exactly matching an Honor piece, so it is a legitimate way to fill slots while gearing. The set bonuses are not: both are worded for War Mode and do nothing in an arena, a Solo Shuffle or a Battleground Blitz.

How many Sparks of War quests are there?

Seven, one each for Eversong Woods, Zul'Aman, Harandar, Voidstorm, Val, Naigtal and The Coiled Isle. Each asks for 100 Sparks of War collected in that zone while in War Mode and pays 1000 Bloody Tokens, 500 Honor, 50 Conquest and 50 Voidlight Marl. Val and Naigtal use Otherworldly Spark of War instead of the ordinary kind. Completing five of the seven awards Spark in the Night.

Do you need War Mode on for PvP talents in arena?

No. PvP talents are always active inside battlegrounds, arenas, Solo Shuffle and Battleground Blitz whatever the toggle says. War Mode only controls whether they work outdoors.

Does War Mode change your item level in a rated match?

No. PvP item level scaling is a property of the gear rather than of the toggle, and it applies identically with War Mode on or off. War Mode's gearing value is that it is a fast route to 331 pieces, and it ends once Conquest gear at 344 starts arriving.
