WoW Hotfixes September 29, 2026: Ula'tek and Brewfest Fixes
Two hotfixes went live for Retail on September 29. Ula'tek's Mother's Wrath can no longer be cast at a player who is not the boss's current target, a case that was slipping through when someone sat above the tank on threat but below the threshold that forces a target change. Items dropped by Coren Direbrew during Brewfest now take the required level of the character that receives them, and stay tradeable.

What changed on September 29
Blizzard published two hotfixes for Retail on September 29, and the one that matters to a raid group is a targeting fix on the tier's final boss. Ula'tek's Mother's Wrath could be aimed at a player who was not the boss's current target, which meant a group could take the cast on someone nobody had planned for. The second entry changes how required levels are stamped on Coren Direbrew's Brewfest drops: the item now takes the level of whoever receives it.
Dungeons and Raids
The Venomous Abyss
Ula'tek
- Fixed an issue with Ula'tek's Mother's Wrath where it can be cast at a target that isn't the current target if a non-target has higher threat but hasn't passed the threat threshold to force a target change.
Events
Brewfest
- Items that drop from Coren Direbrew should now have the required level set to the player who receives the item. They could still trade it but players at lower levels will have to reach the required level to equip it.
Threat thresholds and why the cast went to the wrong player
A boss in World of Warcraft does not swap targets the moment somebody out-threatens the tank. It keeps its current target until another player passes a threshold above the tank's threat, which is what lets a damage dealer climb the threat list without ever pulling the boss off the tank. Blizzard's entry describes a case where that gap was being read incorrectly: a player sitting above the tank on threat, but below the threshold that would actually force a target change, could be handed Mother's Wrath even though the boss was still facing the tank.
For a raid group this showed up as an ability landing on the wrong person without warning, because the player it hit was not the one anybody was watching. After the fix, the cast follows the boss's actual target. Nothing about the ability's damage, range or cadence was touched in this entry, so cooldown assignments built around it still hold; what changes is who the cast can pick.
The Venomous Abyss has had Ula'tek adjusted repeatedly through Season 2, and the encounter is still the tier's end boss - the one Liquid cleared first on Mythic on September 3.
Why Brewfest loot now takes the looter's level
Coren Direbrew's drops stay tradeable, and that is unchanged. What changed is where the required level on the item comes from: it is now set from the character that received the drop. Handing the piece to a lower-level alt does not lower that requirement, so the alt holds the item until it reaches the level printed on it.
In practice that removes the shortcut of running Direbrew on a main and equipping the reward immediately on a fresh character. The item still moves, so a group can still pass drops around; the equip is what waits. If Brewfest is on your list this year, the event's rewards and the daily run are covered in the Brewfest 2026 guide.

FAQ
What did Blizzard hotfix in World of Warcraft on September 29, 2026?
Two entries apply to Retail. Ula'tek's Mother's Wrath no longer targets a player who is not the boss's current target, and items dropped by Coren Direbrew during Brewfest now take the required level of the character that receives them.
Which parts of the game does the September 29 batch touch?
Two: the Ula'tek encounter in the Venomous Abyss, and Coren Direbrew's loot during Brewfest. The section carries no class or specialisation entry and no tuning value.
Was Mother's Wrath damage changed?
Its damage, range and cooldown were untouched. Blizzard's entry addresses only which target the cast can pick.
Why could Mother's Wrath hit someone who was not the boss's target?
A boss only changes target once a player passes a threat threshold above its current target. A player could be above the tank on threat yet below that threshold, and the cast was being handed to them while the boss was still facing the tank.
Can I still trade Coren Direbrew drops to another character?
Yes. Trading still works. The required level printed on the item comes from the character that received the drop, so a lower-level recipient has to reach that level before equipping it.
Does the Brewfest change affect gearing a new alt?
It does. An item received on a high-level character keeps that character's required level, so it cannot be equipped straight away on a lower-level alt even after being traded across.
