Classes
Forever Class Deep Dives: Rogue, Warlock, Mage and Shaman
Blizzard's October 7 class deep dives rebuild the Rogue, Warlock, Mage and Shaman talent trees for World of Warcraft: Forever. Sap no longer breaks Stealth, Improved Blizzard's slow falls to 40%, Curse of Exhaustion reaches 30% at 16 points, Earthbound immobilizes for 5 seconds, and Elemental Mastery is cut for being too strong in PvP.

Forever's talent rules, and what they mean for a build
World of Warcraft: Forever now has published talent notes for four more classes. Blizzard's October 7 deep dives cover
Rogue and
Warlock in one article and
Mage and
Shaman in the other, listing baseline ability changes and a talent-by-talent pass over all twelve trees.
Four rules apply across every tree and set the shape of any build a player plans:
- Talents open at level 10.
- One-point milestone talents sit at 11, 21 and 31 points, joined by a new 16-point milestone.
- Talents are changed at a class trainer in a major city, Legacy talents included.
- Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40.
Blizzard states that the abilities and talents in both articles are in beta and may change before release. Forever launches on November 4, 2026, so every number here is a design target rather than a shipped value. The ruleset and racial side of the same redesign is covered in the Forever rulesets and racials guide, and the mode's rated and reward structure in the Forever PvP guide.
The control and mobility changes that decide Forever PvP
Forever's PvP is built on a 15v15 battleground, a two-track Honor and Rank Point progression, and open-world contest, which makes crowd control, slows and cast speed the lines in these two articles that reach a fight rather than a damage meter. Blizzard names PvP directly twice. On the
Shaman talent Eye of the Storm it writes: "This talent was previously only really useful in PvP." And it gives PvP as part of the reason Elemental Mastery was cut, saying that keeping it would have made Elemental Shaman "much too strong in PvP."
Seven published changes carry further than their own tooltips.
Sap no longer breaks Stealth. A
Rogue who sets up a kill no longer spends the opening of the fight to do it. Dirty Tricks, moved from row 4 to row 2 in Subtlety, also makes Sap never break Stealth and substantially cuts the Energy cost of Sap and Blind, so the setup is cheap as well as free of exposure.
Distract buys area control and announces itself. Distract now reduces affected enemies' Stealth detection for 10 seconds, and Blizzard states that player enemies will know a Rogue is nearby as a result. Improved Distract, a new row 3 Subtlety talent, widens the radius and deepens the detection penalty. Against a group that is not looking for a Rogue, that is a corridor opened; against a group that is, it is a timer started.
Frost trades a field slow for an instant window. Improved Blizzard's maximum movement slow drops to 40%, from 65%, while Permafrost extends Chill effect duration by 11%, 22% or 33% instead of adding flat seconds. In the same tree, Fingers of Frost becomes a row 5 talent that gives Chill effects a chance to grant 1 or 2 charges and makes your spells treat the target as Frozen while they last, and it is the prerequisite for Ice Lance, an instant cast that deals 300% more damage to a Frozen target. A
Mage zoning a battleground choke point loses the stronger field; a Mage who lands a Chill gains a burst that needs no cast at all.
Affliction gets a cheaper kite. Curse of Exhaustion moves from row 5 to row 4 as a 16-point gold medal and reduces movement speed by 30%. Reaching a 30% slow at 16 points rather than deeper in the tree leaves a
Warlock points to spend on Pandemic, Soul Siphon and Wrack instead of paying for mobility control.
Destruction gets a slow on a damage spell. The redesigned Aftermath gives Conflagrate up to a 100% chance to Daze, cutting the target's movement speed by 50% for 5 seconds, and raises Immolate's initial damage by up to 50%. Conflagrate also moves from row 7 to row 4 as a 16-point gold medal, so the slow arrives on a build that is not a full 31-point commitment.
Elemental gains a hard stop. Earthbound, a 21-point gold medal, immobilizes for 5 seconds. Elemental Reach extends Flame Shock's range by up to 15 yards and Fire Nova and Lava Burst by up to 6, which decides whether a Shaman can apply that stop from behind their own line.
Shaman casts get shorter, harder to stop, and totems get mobile. Lightning Bolt ranks 4 and above drop from a 3-second cast to 2.5, and Chain Lightning from 2.5 to 2 at all ranks, with spell power coefficients lowered to match. Elemental Alacrity takes another 0.5 seconds off both. Per-cast damage falls and the odds of finishing a cast under pressure rise, and the redesigned Eye of the Storm now grants resistance to spell pushback while casting Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Lava Burst without first needing a critical strike. Alongside it, the totem global cooldown falls from 1.5 seconds to 1.0, persistent buff totems last 5 minutes instead of 2, and Totemic Projection at level 22 moves every totem up to 30 yards on a 1-minute cooldown for 25% of base mana. A totem placement stops being a commitment to a spot.
One build-level change belongs with these. Mutilate, Assassination's new 21-point gold medal, requires a dagger in each hand, while Combat's new Hack and Slash collapses the four weapon specialisation talents into one and gives axes the extra-attack chance that swords had. Weapon choice becomes a talent decision rather than a loot decision, and a Rogue who wants Mutilate commits to daggers.
Rogue: stealth openers that no longer cost the opener
Rogue baseline abilities
- Poisons: all poisons gain more charges, and poisons can now be applied alongside temporary weapon enchantments such as Weightstones and Sharpening Stones.
- Feint: threat reduction doubled.
- Sap: no longer breaks Stealth. Blizzard gives the reason as a crowd control option for parties and raids facing more monsters than can be tanked safely.
- Distract: also reduces affected enemies' Stealth detection for 10 seconds, and player enemies will then know a Rogue is nearby.
- Expose Armor: armor reduction raised to match five applications of Sunder Armor at around the same level. Expose Armor no longer blocks Sunder Armor, and Sunder Armor still will not overwrite it unless its effect is weaker.
- Axes: Rogues can equip one-handed axes.
Assassination talents
- Improved Gouge: moved to row 1, from Combat.
- Remorseless Attacks: now also affects Mutilate.
- Lethality: now also affects Mutilate, and its critical damage bonus is lowered.
- Malice: its critical strike chance applies to all attacks and Poisons.
- Murder: now applies to Giants, and no longer applies to Beasts or Dragonkin.
- Improved Expose Armor: redesigned. Reduces Expose Armor's Energy cost, and refunds Combo Points when it is used at 5 Combo Points.
- Cold Blood: moved from the 21-point gold medal to the 16-point gold medal, and now also affects Mutilate.
- Improved Poisons: adds a large chance that Poisons do not consume a charge.
- Vigor: now a 2-point talent on row 5, where it was the 31-point gold medal.
- Mutilate: new 21-point gold medal. Costs 60 Energy, strikes with both weapons, which must both be daggers, awards 2 Combo Points, and deals increased damage to Poisoned targets.
- Improved Kidney Shot: its bonus now applies only to your own attacks and Poisons.
- Seal Fate: no longer requires Cold Blood. Mutilate triggers it once if either hand critically strikes.
- Venom: new 31-point gold medal. A 25-Energy finisher that increases Poison damage by 30% and Poison application chance by 10%, with a duration that scales with the Combo Points spent.
Combat talents
- Improved Eviscerate: moved to row 1, from Assassination, with an increased damage bonus.
- Puncturing Wounds, formerly Improved Backstab: a smaller critical strike bonus for Mutilate, plus a chance for Backstab to grant an extra Combo Point.
- Deflection: twice the Parry chance per point.
- Precision: its hit chance applies to all spells and attacks, Poisons included.
- Endurance: now reduces the cooldowns of Sprint and Evasion by a percentage.
- Flawless Execution: new 16-point gold medal. Reduces Eviscerate's Energy cost by 10.
- Dual Wield Specialization: reduced off-hand damage increase.
- Hack and Slash: new row 5 talent replacing Dagger, Mace, Sword and Fist Weapon Specialization. Axes gain the extra-attack chance that swords had, and maces ignore a portion of the target's armor instead of granting a stun chance.
- Weapon Expertise: redesigned. Reduces the target's chance to Dodge and Parry your attacks.
- Aggression: now also increases Backstab damage.
Subtlety talents
- Camouflage: moved from row 2 to row 1.
- Master of Deception: 3 points for the effect that took 5.
- Opportunity: now also affects Mutilate.
- Setup: 3 points gives a 100% chance to trigger.
- Dirty Tricks, formerly Improved Sap: moved from row 4 to row 2. Sap never breaks Stealth, and the Energy cost of Sap and Blind is substantially reduced.
- Improved Ambush: moved from row 3 to row 2.
- Initiative: a 100% chance at 3 points.
- Ghostly Strike and Hemorrhage: their damage bonus applies while a dagger is equipped.
- Improved Distract: new row 3 talent. A larger radius and a greater Stealth detection penalty on distracted enemies.
- Heightened Senses: moved from row 5 to row 4.
- Premeditation: moved from the 31-point gold medal to the 16-point gold medal, with a 20-second duration.
- Serrated Blades: ignores a percentage of armor rather than a flat amount, scaling with level.
- Dirty Deeds: Garrote can be used when not behind the target.
- Hemorrhage: also increases Rupture's damage to the target for 15 seconds.
- Quietus: new row 6 talent requiring Dirty Deeds. Sinister Strike, Ghostly Strike and Hemorrhage deal extra damage to targets below 35% health.
- Cutthroat: new row 6 talent. Backstab can make your next Ambush usable without Stealth.
- Thousand Cuts: new 31-point gold medal. Each Rupture damage tick reduces the Energy cost of your next Hemorrhage or Backstab by 3, stacking up to 5 times.
- Removed: Sleight of Hand and Deadliness.
Warlock: curses become Banes and pets scale with you
Warlock baseline abilities
- Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom become Banes, and only one Bane per Warlock can sit on a target.
- Curse of the Elements: now applies to all magic damage.
- Curse of Shadows: removed.
- Firestone and Spellstone become Weapon Imbues that stack with Wizard Oil. Firestone grants Fire damage and critical strike chance; Spellstone grants Shadow damage and spell haste.
- Life Tap: now scales with Spirit, and its tooltip states the mana gained correctly.
- Drain Soul: each tick carries a progressive chance to grant a Soul Shard, which is guaranteed eventually.
- Pets: now scale from the summoner's stats.
Affliction talents
- Improved Life Tap: moved from row 2 to row 1.
- Suppression: redesigned. Up to 5% increased chance to hit and up to 20% reduced threat.

- Pandemic: new row 3 talent. Up to 100% critical damage bonus for Corruption, Bane of Agony, Bane of Doom, Drain Soul, Drain Life, Siphon Life and Wrack.
- Nightfall: now also triggered by Drain Soul and Wrack.
- Curse of Exhaustion: moved from row 5 to row 4 as the 16-point gold medal, reducing movement speed by 30%.
- Malevolence: new row 4 talent. Up to 5% increased chance for Shadow critical effects.
- Soul Siphon: new row 5 talent. Up to 12% per other Affliction spell on the target, to a maximum of 36%.

- Fel Domination: now the 16-point gold medal, and requires Master Summoner.
- Master Summoner: moved from row 4 to row 3.
- Demonic Sacrifice: redesigned as the 11-point gold medal, lasting 2 hours. Imp increases Shadow damage, Voidwalker restores mana, Succubus and Incubus increase Fire damage, and Felhunter restores health.
- Decimation: new row 4 talent. Reduces Soul Fire's cooldown by up to 90%. Shadow Bolt or Searing Pain on an enemy below 35% health increases the damage dealt to them, and for 10 seconds Soul Fire's cast time is reduced by up to 40% and costs no Soul Shard.
- Demonic Brand: new row 4 talent. Searing Pain generates less threat and brands the target, so your pet's next 2 attacks deal Fire or Shadow damage, with Shadow generating high threat.
- Soul Link: moved from row 7 to row 5.
- Improved Felhunter: new row 5 talent. Increases the Attack Power reduction of Tainted Blood, Devour Magic's healing and Paranoia's detection by 10%, and reduces Spell Lock's cooldown by 2 seconds.

Destruction talents
- Destructive Reach: moved from row 4 to row 1, and applies to all damaging spells.

Mage: Frostfire Bolt arrives and the Blizzard slow is cut
Mage baseline abilities
- Comprehension and Comprehend Scroll: a new minor tradeskill for reading scrolls.
- Cone of Cold: reduced duration.
- Frostfire Bolt: learned at level 40. A 3-second cast that counts as both Fire and Frost, applying damage over time and a movement slow. It uses the higher of the caster's Fire or Frost spell damage bonus and the lower of the target's two resistances.
- Mage Armor: increased Spirit-based mana regeneration.

- Improved Counterspell: slightly redesigned. At 1 point you always get a shorter Silence, instead of a 50% chance of the full one.
- Arcane Meditation: increases Spirit-based mana regeneration while casting, and requires Arcane Concentration.
- Missile Barrage: new 16-point gold medal. Certain spells can make your next Arcane Missiles channel twice as fast at no mana cost, and the chance doubles for Arcane Blast.

- Arcane Instability: no longer requires Presence of Mind.
- Arcane Power: now requires Presence of Mind.
- Moved to baseline: Magic Attunement.
Fire talents
- Wake of Fire, formerly Improved Fire Blast: moved to row 1. Cuts Fire Blast's cooldown further, and each non-trivial kill gives your next Fire Blast a large critical strike chance bonus.
- Incineration, formerly Incinerate: moved to row 1. Adds critical strike chance to Ice Lance and Arcane Blast as well as Fire Blast and Scorch.
- Improved Fireball: also reduces Frostfire Bolt's cast time.

- Heating Up: new row 4 talent requiring Pyroblast. Non-periodic critical strikes from Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch each reduce your next Pyroblast's cast time by 25%, stacking up to 3 times, which brings Pyroblast to a 1.5-second cast.

Frost talents
- Elemental Precision: increases your chance to hit with Fire and Frost spells, instead of reducing the target's chance to resist.

- Winter's Chill: benefits only the Mage who cast it, and its critical strike chance increase applies only to Frostbolt and Ice Lance.
Shaman: faster casts and totems that move
Shaman baseline abilities
- Totems: the global cooldown drops to 1.0 second, from 1.5. Persistent buff totems last 5 minutes, up from 2. A tracking panel shows active totems and their remaining time, and right-clicking unsummons one. Resistance Totems affect the whole raid.

- Fire Nova: replaces Fire Nova Totem, erupting at the current Fire Totem's location so it can be repeated without replacing a totem.
- Windfury Totem: now a party-wide buff rather than a weapon enchant. A Shaman using Windfury Weapon cannot benefit, and it cannot be paired with Grace of Air or Flametongue Totem.
- Flametongue Totem: now a party-wide buff. A Shaman using Flametongue Weapon cannot benefit, and it cannot be paired with Windfury Totem.
- Tranquil Air Totem: removed.
- Totemic Projection: learned at level 22. Moves all totems up to 30 yards, on a 1-minute cooldown, for 25% of base mana.
- Totemic Recall: learned at level 20. Instantly destroys all totems and refunds 25% of their mana cost, with a beta bug currently preventing the refund.
- Call of the Elements: learned at level 20. Unlocks a totem bar holding one totem per element, summoned on a 3-second cast for the combined mana cost of all four.
- Call of the Spirits: learned at level 30. Adds a second preset set of four totems.
- Call of the Ancestors: learned at level 40. Adds a third preset set of four totems.
- Lightning Bolt: ranks 4 and above have their cast time cut from 3 seconds to 2.5, with the spell power coefficient lowered to match.

- Improved Fire Nova: redesigned to increase Fire Nova's damage and reduce its cooldown.
- Eye of the Storm: redesigned to grant resistance to spell pushback from damage while casting Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Lava Burst, where it previously required a critical strike first. Blizzard notes that the talent "was previously only really useful in PvP".
- Elemental Alacrity: 3 points, reducing the cast time of Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning by 0.5 seconds, and also affecting Lava Burst.
- Call of Thunder: 16-point gold medal, granting 3% increased critical strike chance for Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning.

- Lightning Overload: moved to row 5.
- Earthbound: 21-point gold medal, immobilizing for 5 seconds.
- Elemental Fury: moved to row 6.
- Lava Burst: 31-point gold medal. A 2.5-second cast dealing 20% more damage to targets affected by Flame Shock, on a 10-second cooldown.
- Removed: Elemental Mastery. Blizzard gives as part of the reason that keeping it would have made Elemental Shaman "much too strong in PvP".
Enhancement talents
- Earth's Grasp: moved from Elemental to row 1 of Enhancement.
- Thundering Strikes: its critical strike chance applies to all spells and attacks.
- Ancestral Knowledge: increases Intellect instead of maximum mana.
- Mental Dexterity: new row 2 talent, raising Attack Power by a percentage of your Intellect.

Practising these four classes before Forever launches
Forever opens on November 4, 2026. Until then the four classes in these deep dives are played on the live Retail ladder, where the habits that carry over are the ones these talent trees reward: a Rogue who opens on a target already set up, a Mage who converts a slow into burst, a Warlock who keeps a kite going without spending a cooldown, a Shaman who repositions totems mid-fight. The spec standing on the Retail 3v3 ladder is the quickest read on which of the four is currently rewarding that play, in EU and US.
PvP tier list
rating first · top segment 2475+ · 531 playersMetaSolo Shuffle is the bracket that isolates a single specialisation, which makes it the closest live analogue to learning one Forever tree at a time: six rounds, no fixed partners, and the same spec every round. The Solo Shuffle leaderboard shows who is doing that best in EU and US, and the activity feed shows whether the queue is deep enough to get games now.
Two of the four trees change most in ways a Retail player can rehearse directly. The Forever Subtlety tree is built around stealth openers that no longer cost the opener, which is the same decision tree a Retail
Subtlety Rogue works through on the Subtlety Rogue spec page. The Forever Frost tree turns Chill effects into an instant-damage window, which is how a Retail
Frost Mage already plays, on the Frost Mage spec page.
What to do before November 4
Three actions follow from the published notes. Pick the tree whose milestone talents match the role you want, because Mutilate, Wrack, Incinerate, Lava Burst, Riptide and Thousand Cuts all sit at 21 or 31 points and a split build reaches none of them. Plan the 16-point milestone separately: Cold Blood, Flawless Execution, Premeditation, Curse of Exhaustion, Fel Domination, Conflagrate, Missile Barrage, Ice Block, Call of Thunder, Stormstrike and Mana Tide Totem all live there, and it is the one new decision point in every tree. And settle weapons before talents, because Mutilate needs two daggers and Hack and Slash rewrites what each weapon type does.
The mode's rated structure, reward tracks and battleground are covered in the Forever PvP guide, and the ruleset and racial redesign these talent trees sit inside is in the Forever rulesets and racials guide.
FAQ
When do talents unlock in World of Warcraft: Forever?
Talents open at level 10. One-point milestone talents sit at 11, 21 and 31 points, and Forever adds a new 16-point milestone. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40.
Where are talents changed in World of Warcraft: Forever?
At a class trainer in a major city. That applies to Legacy talents as well, so a respec between a group build and a PvP build is a trip to a trainer rather than a free swap in the field.
Which classes do the October 7 Forever class deep dives cover?
Two articles published on October 7 cover four classes: Rogue and Warlock in one, Mage and Shaman in the other. Earlier instalments covered Hunter and Druid, and Priest and Warrior.
Does Sap still break Stealth in World of Warcraft: Forever?
No. Sap no longer breaks Stealth as a baseline change, and the Subtlety talent Dirty Tricks, moved from row 4 to row 2, repeats that and substantially reduces the Energy cost of Sap and Blind.
Why was Elemental Mastery removed from the Forever Shaman tree?
Blizzard gives PvP as part of the reason, writing that keeping the talent would have made Elemental Shaman "much too strong in PvP". Lava Burst takes the 31-point gold medal slot in Elemental Combat instead.
How strong is the Improved Blizzard slow in Forever?
Its maximum movement slow is 40%, reduced from 65%. Permafrost compensates in a different direction by extending Chill effect duration by 11%, 22% or 33% per point rather than adding flat seconds.
Which talents sit at the new 16-point milestone?
Across the four classes: Cold Blood and Flawless Execution and Premeditation for Rogue, Curse of Exhaustion and Fel Domination and Conflagrate for Warlock, Missile Barrage and Ice Block for Mage, and Call of Thunder and Stormstrike and Mana Tide Totem for Shaman.
Are the talent values in the Forever deep dives final?
No. Blizzard states that the abilities and talents in both articles are in beta and may change. Forever launches on November 4, 2026, and a value can move between a deep dive and release.
