Midnight Season 3 Dungeon Preview: Uldaman Drops to Four Bosses
Blizzard has previewed the returning dungeons in the Midnight Season 3 pool. Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr loses the Lost Dwarves encounter, The Stonecore is being fully revamped, Iron Docks gets a substantial refresh, and Maisara Caverns, Magisters' Terrace, Sanguine Depths and The Underrot each pick up encounter and routing changes.

Seven returning dungeons are being reworked for Season 3
Blizzard has published an early look at the returning dungeons in the Midnight Season 3 pool, and the work goes well past tuning. The Stonecore is being fully revamped, Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr drops from five bosses to four, Iron Docks gets a substantial refresh, and Maisara Caverns, Magisters' Terrace, Sanguine Depths and The Underrot each pick up encounter, creature or routing changes.
None of it is final. The wording throughout is "we're exploring", "we're looking to" and "we're planning", and the preview closes by asking for "continued feedback". The stated aim is to address "pain points from previous seasons, including updates to encounters, overall dungeon pacing, and abilities that were too difficult or unclear", after "reviewing community feedback alongside our own goals for each dungeon".
Maisara Caverns and Magisters' Terrace get new paths and new creatures
The two Midnight-era dungeons in the pool are being opened up, not rebuilt. Both changes are about giving a run more than one answer in the sections players currently solve the same way every time.
- In Maisara Caverns, Blizzard is "exploring changes to captive and buff locations in the opening section to give you new paths to explore".
- The Muro'jin and Nekraxx encounter is being revised "to improve clarity around its core mechanic".
- In Magisters' Terrace, the library event is being reexamined "to offer new paths through the space and new books to find".
- The Degentrius encounter is also being updated.
- Non-boss enemies across both dungeons are being reviewed and updated, including Bound Defenders in Maisara Caverns and the Devouring Tyrant in Magisters' Terrace, with some of them possibly replaced by "entirely new creatures, giving players new challenges to learn".
Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr drops to four bosses
The clearest commitment in the preview. Blizzard is "reducing the dungeon from five bosses to four in Heroic, Mythic, and Mythic+ by deactivating the Lost Dwarves encounter", and is "adjusting the surrounding story flow to support this change".
Emberon is being updated as well, "so that Purging Flames triggers at health thresholds rather than on a repeating energy cycle". That turns a timer the group waits out into a phase the group's own damage controls, which changes how the fight is paced without changing how hard it hits.
Iron Docks is getting a pass over every boss
Blizzard is "planning a substantial refresh to bring the dungeon up to modern standards and reworking the experience". Non-boss enemies throughout Iron Docks are being revisited, and all four boss encounters are being updated "to modernize their abilities".
The Iron Stars survive the pass. Blizzard calls them "a unique part of Iron Docks that we want to preserve" while exploring "an updated design", so the mechanic stays in some form instead of being cut.
The Stonecore is being fully revamped
The largest single item here. Blizzard is "taking this opportunity to fully revamp The Stonecore dungeon", with the aim of modernizing it "both visually and mechanically while preserving the memorable moments from Cataclysm". In practice that means "new designs for every enemy and boss encounter", and "many familiar creatures a new look with updated models".
Two fixtures are staying put: "Players will still need to chase Millhouse Manastorm down The Winding Halls and break yourself upon Ozruk's body." A visual and mechanical rebuild of a fifteen-year-old dungeon is the sort of change that resets route knowledge entirely, so anyone who runs The Stonecore on autopilot today should expect to relearn it.
Sanguine Depths is being simplified
This is a readability pass on trash rather than on bosses. Blizzard wants to "streamline the creature selection and ability kits of non-boss enemies to make gameplay more readable and focused", and names two specific targets: "the high density of caster packs and the number of abilities that use cast bars".
- Dark Acolytes and Wicked Oppressors are being combined "into a single creature type", and players will encounter them less often.
- Boss encounters keep their "core encounter designs intact", with mechanical clarity improved "where appropriate".
Fewer cast bars in Sanguine Depths is a direct answer to the interrupt load that made the dungeon punishing on high keys, and it points the same way as the Underrot change below.
The Underrot reworks Elder Leaxa and Cragmaw
- Elder Leaxa is being revisited to "update the encounter and place less emphasis on interrupt gameplay".
- Cragmaw is being revisited "to encourage you to use more of the arena during the encounter".
- Non-boss enemies are being refreshed and their placement updated, "with particular attention to giving you new routes through the final section".
The Elder Leaxa change is the one that reaches group composition. An encounter built around interrupts rewards groups that bring several of them, and taking the emphasis off widens what a key can be run with.
When Season 3 starts
There is no date and no patch number. The published order is the one given at BlizzCon: content update 12.1.5 is on the PTR now, Midnight: Eclipse follows as the final major content update to Midnight, and Season 3 arrives after Eclipse launches. Nothing in the dungeon preview attaches a date to any of it.
The pool's eighth dungeon, Thraegar's Stand, is new and arrives with Eclipse, so it sits outside this pass over returning content. Content update 12.1.5 is the update that lands first, and the Midnight 12.1.5 overview covers what it brings.
Blizzard's own pages are the Season 3 dungeon pool preview and the Midnight: What's Next panel recap, where the pool was announced. More coverage of the same kind sits in the PvE guides.
FAQ

How many bosses will Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr have in Season 3?
Four. Blizzard is reducing the dungeon from five bosses to four in Heroic, Mythic and Mythic+ by deactivating the Lost Dwarves encounter, and adjusting the surrounding story flow to support it.
Is The Stonecore being retuned or rebuilt?
Rebuilt. Blizzard describes a full revamp that modernizes the dungeon visually and mechanically, with new designs for every enemy and boss encounter and updated models for many familiar creatures. Millhouse Manastorm and Ozruk both stay.
When does Midnight Season 3 start?
Blizzard has not given a date or a patch number. The published order is content update 12.1.5 first, which is on the PTR now, then Midnight: Eclipse as the final major content update to Midnight, then Season 3 shortly after Eclipse launches.
Are these dungeon changes final?
No. The preview is written as intent - Blizzard says it is exploring, looking to and planning these changes - and it closes by asking for continued feedback. The individual items are direction, not patch notes.
What is changing in Sanguine Depths?
Mostly trash. Blizzard wants to streamline non-boss creature selection and ability kits, reduce the density of caster packs and cut the number of abilities that use cast bars. Dark Acolytes and Wicked Oppressors are being combined into a single creature type that appears less often. Boss encounters keep their core designs.
Do the Iron Stars stay in Iron Docks?
Yes. Blizzard calls them a unique part of Iron Docks that it wants to preserve, while exploring an updated design for them.
