BlizzCon 2026: A New PvP Journey and an Undated Season 3

Blizzard confirmed at BlizzCon 2026 that rated play returns with Midnight Season 3, that PvP progression is being refreshed around something called a Journey, and that World of Warcraft: Forever adds a 15 vs 15 battleground. No release dates were given, and two content updates come first, so nothing changes for the ladder yet.

What Blizzard announced for PvP

The World of Warcraft What's Next panel at BlizzCon 2026 named two things that reach rated play in Retail. A new rated PvP season arrives with Midnight Season 3, and progression is being reworked around something Blizzard calls a Journey. A third announcement, a 15 vs 15 battleground, belongs to World of Warcraft: Forever rather than to Retail.

No tuning was announced, no new bracket, and no change to how rating works. Nothing in the panel takes effect in the season you are currently playing.

How far off Season 3 actually is

Blizzard set out the order of what comes next, and the order is the part worth reading carefully. The 12.1.5 content update is first, and it is described as "currently on the PTR" rather than live. Eclipse follows it, and Blizzard calls Eclipse "the final major content update to Midnight". Only then does Season 3 arrive:

"Shortly after the launch of Eclipse, Season 3 kicks off, and along with the new raids and a PvP season, champions of Azeroth will experience a new Mythic+ dungeon pool and changes to Delves."

So two content updates stand between now and the new PvP season, and the first of them has not shipped yet. Blizzard published no release date for Eclipse, no patch number for it, and no date for Season 3, so nobody can put a week on it. What the ordering does establish is that Season 2 is not close to ending. The Midnight 12.1.5 overview covers what the nearer update contains, and it carries no PvP season of its own.

That matters mainly as a correction to expectations. An announcement like this usually reads as a countdown, and this one is not: there is no rush to finish anything, and a rating goal you set for Season 2 has room to be a normal project rather than a sprint.

A Journey for PvP

Blizzard's announcement for it is one sentence: "PvP progression is getting refreshed with a new Journey that gives you cool PvP rewards."

That is the whole of it. The word "refreshed" points at progression rather than at balance, so the systems in its path are the ones that turn games played into rewards earned: Honor for unrated gear, Conquest for rated gear against a weekly cap, and rating thresholds for seasonal titles and mounts. Whether a Journey replaces any of those, sits beside them, or changes how rating maps to rewards is not published, and the announcement gives no basis for guessing.

Until it is detailed, all three work exactly as they do today. The current mapping from rating to reward is set out in the PvP rewards by rating breakdown, and the weekly currency cap in the Conquest cap schedule.

What is actually in play in Season 2

Since the announcement changes nothing now, the thresholds that decide this year's rewards are still the ones to aim at. They move with the ladder rather than sitting at a fixed number, so a target set back in August is probably not the target today.

Solo Shuffle runs its own thresholds, and they behave differently because the population queueing into it is much larger.

The percentage-based titles are the ones to watch rather than the fixed rating ones, because they are set by everyone above you: your own rating can hold steady while the line moves past you. Which rewards use a percentage and which use a flat rating is explained in the PvP cutoffs guide.

A 15 vs 15 battleground in World of Warcraft: Forever

World of Warcraft: Forever got a What's Next panel of its own. It launches on November 4, 2026 and is a separate version of the game rather than a Retail update. What it announced for PvP is a new map:

"For PvP, the Darkspear Islands will introduce a 15 vs 15 Battleground off the coast of Kalimdor, combining strategic control points with Arathi Basin-style flag captures and defense."

Blizzard added that "PvP updates, dungeon quests, and new rewards will continue to make conflict, cooperation, and discovery an unmistakable part of World of Warcraft: Forever". Nothing published so far describes rated PvP, arena, ratings or a ladder in Forever, so a Retail player has nothing to plan around there and none of the thresholds above apply to it.

The comparison to Arathi Basin is worth taking literally: on a control-point map, node rotation and defence assignments decide more games than teamfight burst does. The same habits are covered in the Arathi Basin guide.

Where to go next

The most useful thing to take from the panel is that nothing has to change today. Season 2's rewards are unchanged and its thresholds are live, so a climb started now runs on the same rules it did last week.

FAQ

Will there be a new rated PvP season in World of Warcraft?

Yes. Blizzard confirmed at BlizzCon 2026 that Midnight Season 3 carries one. No date was given for it.

When does Midnight Season 3 begin?

No date has been announced, and it is not close. Two content updates come first: 12.1.5, which is still on the PTR, and then Eclipse, which has no release date or patch number of its own. Season 3 follows shortly after Eclipse launches.

What is the new PvP Journey?

Blizzard announced it in one line: PvP progression is getting refreshed with a new Journey that gives PvP rewards. No further detail has been published, including how it interacts with Honor, Conquest, or rating-based rewards.

Is Eclipse the same thing as patch 12.1.5?

No. Blizzard's panel recap treats them as separate updates: 12.1.5 is described as the next Midnight content update and is currently on the PTR, while Eclipse is described as the final major content update to Midnight and comes after it.

Do I need to rush to finish my Season 2 rewards?

No. Season 3 sits behind two content updates and the first of them has not shipped, so there is no announced deadline to work against. Season 2 rewards are earned on the same terms they were before the panel.

Does anything announced at BlizzCon change rated play right now?

No. No specialisation tuning, rating threshold, bracket, or reward change was announced for the current season. Everything named takes effect in a future content update.

Does World of Warcraft: Forever have arena or rated PvP?

Blizzard has announced a 15 vs 15 battleground on the Darkspear Islands and further PvP updates for Forever. Arena, rated battlegrounds, Solo Shuffle, and PvP ratings have not been mentioned for it, so there is nothing confirmed to plan around.
