WoW Catalyst in Midnight Season 2: Charges and Tier Sets
Every source of Venomblight Manaflux, the eight charge cap, the five slots that make real tier pieces, and why converting Conquest armour is now the fastest way for a rated player to finish a four set.

What the Catalyst does
The Catalyst turns a piece of armour you already own into the matching class set piece for the current season. You hand it a helm, shoulders, chest, gloves or legs, you spend one charge, and you get back the tier version of that slot at the same item level. Four of those pieces give you your class set bonuses, which for most specialisations is the single largest power gain available outside of raising item level.
In Midnight Season 2 the charge currency is Venomblight Manaflux, one charge converts one piece, and you can hold a maximum of eight at a time. The important change this season is what survives the conversion: the resulting tier piece keeps the secondary stats, tertiary stats, gem sockets and cantrip effects of the item you put in. That single line is what turns the Catalyst from a compromise into the main way rated players finish a set.
Where to find the Catalyst and how to unlock it
The Catalyst sits in Silvermoon City. The neutral forge is in the Bazaar at roughly 40.2, 64.8, staffed by Eldara Dawnrunner, whose title is Catalyst Steward. There is a second Catalyst in the Court of Blood at roughly 70.2, 83.4, which is Horde territory; the Bazaar forge is the one both factions use.
/way #2393 40.2 64.8 The Catalyst /way #2393 70.2 83.4 The Catalyst (Court of Blood)
Access is gated behind one short quest, Taste True Power, offered at the forge itself and available to both factions from level 90. Its only function is to unlock the Catalyst, so a character that has never converted anything has one quest between it and its first tier piece.
Venomblight Manaflux, the Season 2 charge
The currency tooltip is short and it answers most of the questions people ask about the system:
"Charge the Catalyst with Venomblight Manaflux to imbue armor with incredible power. The resulting armor will inherit the secondary stats of the original equipment. Slowly accumulates every two weeks."
Three facts fall out of it. The accrual is passive and fortnightly, counted from the season start in the week of 18 August 2026. The cap is 8, which is the same cap Season 1 used. And the stat inheritance is now written into the currency itself rather than being a property of individual tier pieces, which is the wording Season 1's Dawnlight Manaflux did not carry.
Every source of charges
There are only four ways to gain Venomblight Manaflux, and two of them are locked until you already have a set.
| Source | What it needs | How much |
|---|---|---|
| Passive accrual | Nothing, it ticks on its own | One every two weeks, to a cap of 8 |
| Seasonal Feat of Strength | 1600 rated PvP, 2000 Mythic+ rating, or a Heroic or Mythic Ula'tek kill | One crystallised item, once per character |
| Mythic+ dungeons, Season 2 raid bosses, Bountiful Delves, rated arenas and battlegrounds | The Catalyst Unbound Feat of Strength, which needs your class set bonuses | Random drops, no published rate |
The drop sources are the ones people miss, because they are the ones that make the system fast, and they do not exist for you until you have already finished a set through the slow route.
The four piece gate that did not go away
A number of Season 2 write-ups state that Blizzard removed the requirement to own a set before charges start dropping. The live currency tooltip says otherwise, in its own words:
"Also earnable from the following activities after unlocking the Season 2 Catalyst Unbound Feat of Strength: Mythic Keystone Dungeons, Midnight Season 2 Raid Bosses, Bountiful Delves, Rated PvP Arenas and Battlegrounds."
Midnight Season 2: Catalyst Unbound is a Feat of Strength awarded for unlocking your class set bonuses, and its reward line reads "Venomblight Manaflux can drop from additional sources." Blizzard described the same mechanic when it was introduced: acquiring a class set four piece bonus unlocks a character specific Feat of Strength that enables Catalyst charges to drop from raid bosses, Mythic+, Bountiful Delves and rated PvP on that character.
The gate is real, and it is worth understanding rather than resenting. It is not asking you to catalyse four pieces. It is asking you to have the four set bonus by any route, so a raider who loots two tier tokens only needs to convert two items to open the drops.
The achievement is tied to the set bonus aura rather than to a piece count, which is how one specialisation ended up earning it early.
Survival Hunter had its two set and four set bonuses swapped at some point during development, and for the first two weeks of Season 2 those Hunters received Catalyst Unbound at two pieces. Blizzard has since corrected it.
Serpent Scion and the one extra charge
Midnight Season 2: Serpent Scion is the other Feat of Strength, and it is the only source of a charge that is not either passive or gated behind a finished set. Its tooltip asks for one of three things, accomplished "on your current character":
- 1600 or higher rated PvP rating
- 2000 or higher Mythic+ rating
- Ula'tek defeated in The Venomous Abyss on Heroic or Mythic difficulty
Any one of the three completes it, and for a player who queues rated PvP at all, 1600 is by a distance the cheapest of the three. It is one rank above Challenger II and well below the ratings where the ladder gets punishing.
The reward is Crystallized Venomblight Manaflux, a bind on pickup item you right click to open. Its tooltip states only that it grants Venomblight Manaflux; it names no quantity. Wowhead reported in June that the achievement awarded three charges and then published a correction saying the figure came from a mismatch between tooltip text and live behaviour. Season 1's equivalent crystallised item granted a single unit, and nothing in the Season 2 item's own text supports a larger number, so treat this as one charge until Blizzard prints a figure.
Because the criteria are checked on your current character, this is a per character bonus. An alt that reaches 1600 earns its own.
Which slots become tier, and which only change the look
Five slots produce real class set pieces. Four more can be run through the Catalyst, and those produce an off set appearance with no set bonus contribution at all, while still costing a full charge.
| Slot | What you get | Costs a charge |
|---|---|---|
| Helm | Class set piece, counts toward set bonuses | Yes |
| Shoulders | Class set piece, counts toward set bonuses | Yes |
| Chest | Class set piece, counts toward set bonuses | Yes |
| Hands | Class set piece, counts toward set bonuses | Yes |
| Legs | Class set piece, counts toward set bonuses | Yes |
| Back, wrists, waist, feet | Off set appearance only, no set bonus | Yes |
Converting a cloak or a belt is a transmogrification decision, not a gearing one. At eight charges a season it is an expensive one, so make it after your set is finished rather than before.
Which gear you can feed it
The Catalyst accepts more than raid drops, and this is where PvP players are better served than they expect.
- PvE armour on the Veteran track or higher. Anything below Veteran is refused.
- PvP armour bought with Honor or Conquest, and War Mode gear. All of it is eligible.
- Not profession crafted armour. A crafted piece cannot be converted, whatever its item level.
- Not an item that is already a set piece. A tier token or a looted tier piece has nothing to convert into.
The Season 2 change that matters most
Before patch 12.1, a converted item took the tier piece's own fixed secondary stats. You chose between the set bonus and your stat distribution, and for anyone whose specialisation cared about a particular pair of secondaries, that was a real cost.
Since 12.1 the converted piece keeps what the original had. Secondary stats, tertiary stats, gem sockets and cantrip effects all carry through. Compare the two currency tooltips and the change is visible in one line: Season 1's Dawnlight Manaflux says only that it charges the Catalyst, while Season 2's Venomblight Manaflux states outright that the resulting armour inherits the secondary stats of the original equipment.
The practical consequence is that you now choose your input by its stats. Two chest pieces at the same item level are no longer interchangeable inputs; the one with the better secondaries produces the better tier piece.
What this means for rated PvP
For a rated player the stat inheritance change is the whole story, because it removes the reason not to run tier. A Conquest piece is itemised for PvP, and a piece converted from Conquest keeps that itemisation along with the PvP item level of the item it was made from, so it still scales up inside arenas and battlegrounds the way the original did. This is why current specialisation guides now recommend completing the four set as early as possible instead of treating it as a trade against Versatility.
Season 2 scales PvP gear to fixed targets rather than adding a flat bonus: 318 on the Combatant track, 331 for Honor pieces, and 344 for Conquest pieces once you are inside rated play. Converting a Conquest helm does not move it off that scaling, so the practical order for a rated player is to buy Conquest armour in the five tier slots first and convert those, rather than converting raid or dungeon pieces that scale down against you.
One question worth answering directly, because it stops people converting anything: catalysing armour does not endanger Gladiator's Distinction. That two piece bonus lives on the Venomous Gladiator's Emblem and the Venomous Gladiator's Medallion, the two PvP trinkets, not on the armour set. Convert all five armour slots and the bonus is untouched.
The full picture on where Honor and Conquest come from, and how the caps work, is in our PvP gearing guide.
Reaching 1600 for Serpent Scion
If the raid and the Mythic+ routes are not your content, 1600 rated PvP rating is the requirement to beat, and Solo Shuffle is usually the fastest way to it because it needs no team. Rating below 1600 moves quickly, so the practical question is which specialisation you queue rather than how many games you play.

If you want to watch live rating movement while you climb, the EU activity feed and US activity feed update as matches finish.
Rating also unlocks a long list of other things at and above that band, which our rewards by rating guide lays out in full.
Spending eight charges without wasting one
Eight is the ceiling, not a budget you are meant to fill. The accrual stops adding once you are capped, so a character sitting at 8 charges is quietly losing one every two weeks.
- Convert to four pieces first, then stop. The four set opens Catalyst Unbound, and Catalyst Unbound is what makes charges plentiful. Every charge spent before that on a cloak or a fifth slot delays the thing that ends the shortage.
- Let the raid or the vault fill a slot if it is going to. A looted tier piece costs no charge. If two tokens are realistically coming, convert the three slots they will not cover.
- Do not sit at the cap. If you are at 8 and the piece you want has not dropped, converting a merely acceptable item is better than losing the accrual, because the conversion is per item and you can convert a better one later.
- Alts are separate. Charges, Serpent Scion and Catalyst Unbound are all tracked per character, so an alt begins from zero and from its own quest.
Blizzard's stated design for Catalyst Unbound is that it is character specific. Players reported during Season 1 that the drop unlock behaved as though it applied across a warband once any character had a four set, and Blizzard has not commented on those reports, so plan for the per character behaviour that is documented and treat anything wider as a bonus.
Bugs Blizzard has already fixed
Two Catalyst problems from the first weeks of the season were corrected in the hotfixes of 2 September 2026, and both are worth knowing about because the symptoms look like user error:
- "Any remaining items sourced from the Great Vault that could not be converted with the Catalyst have been fixed." Vault pieces that the forge refused now convert normally.
- "Fixed an issue where certain non-armor items could appear to be convertible at the Catalyst." Items that were never eligible no longer show up as though they were.
The Survival Hunter set bonus swap was corrected in the same period.
Season 1 and Season 2 side by side
If you last used the Catalyst in Season 1, three things changed and two did not.
| Detail | Season 1 | Season 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Charge currency | Dawnlight Manaflux | Venomblight Manaflux |
| Cap | 8 | 8 |
| Passive accrual | One every two weeks | One every two weeks |
| Secondary stats on the result | Fixed by the tier piece | Inherited from the item you convert |
| Sockets, tertiaries and cantrips | Not carried over | Carried over |
| Extra drop sources | After the set bonus Feat of Strength | After the set bonus Feat of Strength |
Season 1's currency is no longer obtainable, and Venomblight Manaflux will go the same way when Season 2 ends, so there is nothing to bank across seasons.
What to do next
Pick up Taste True Power at the Bazaar forge in Silvermoon if you have not already. Buy or loot armour for the five tier slots, choosing inputs by their secondary stats rather than by item level alone. Convert until you have four set pieces, which opens the drop sources and effectively ends the charge shortage for that character. If you queue rated PvP, take the 1600 route to Serpent Scion for the extra charge, since it is the least demanding of the three criteria by a wide margin.
FAQ
How many Catalyst charges can you hold in Midnight Season 2?
Eight. Venomblight Manaflux has a total cap of 8, the same cap Season 1 used, and one charge converts one piece of armour. Accrual stops adding while you sit at the cap, so a character parked at 8 is losing one charge every two weeks.
Do you still need a four piece set before charges start dropping?
Yes. The currency tooltip states that Venomblight Manaflux is earnable from Mythic+ dungeons, Season 2 raid bosses, Bountiful Delves and rated PvP only after unlocking the Season 2 Catalyst Unbound Feat of Strength, which is awarded for unlocking your class set bonuses. Write-ups claiming the gate was removed in Season 2 are describing a test realm build. You do not have to catalyse four pieces to open it, though: looted tier pieces count toward the set bonus just the same.
Where is the Catalyst in Midnight?
In Silvermoon City. The neutral forge is in the Bazaar at roughly 40.2, 64.8, with Eldara Dawnrunner, the Catalyst Steward, standing at it. A second Catalyst sits in the Court of Blood at roughly 70.2, 83.4 in Horde territory. Access is unlocked by one short quest, Taste True Power, offered at the forge and available to both factions.
Which armour slots produce a real tier piece?
Helm, shoulders, chest, hands and legs. Back, wrists, waist and feet can also be run through the Catalyst, but they produce an off set appearance with no contribution to the set bonus while still costing a full charge, so treat those as a transmogrification purchase to make after your set is finished.
Can you use the Catalyst on PvP gear?
Yes. Honor gear, Conquest gear and War Mode gear are all eligible, as is PvE armour on the Veteran track or higher. Profession crafted armour cannot be converted at any item level, and neither can an item that is already a set piece.
Does a catalysed Conquest piece still scale up in rated PvP?
It keeps the PvP item level of the item it was made from, so a converted Conquest piece still scales to the Gladiator target of 344 inside arenas and battlegrounds. Since patch 12.1 it also keeps the original piece's secondary stats, which is why current specialisation guides recommend completing the four set as early as possible rather than treating it as a trade against Versatility.
Does converting armour break Gladiator's Distinction?
No. Gladiator's Distinction is a two piece bonus carried by the Venomous Gladiator's Emblem and the Venomous Gladiator's Medallion, the two PvP trinkets, not by the armour set. You can convert all five tier slots without touching it.
How many charges does the Serpent Scion achievement give?
Its reward, Crystallized Venomblight Manaflux, states only that it grants Venomblight Manaflux and names no quantity. Wowhead reported three charges in June and then published a correction attributing the figure to a mismatch between tooltip text and live behaviour. Season 1's equivalent crystallised item granted a single unit, so plan around one charge. The achievement itself is earned on your current character for 1600 rated PvP rating, 2000 Mythic+ rating, or a Heroic or Mythic Ula'tek kill.
